Privacy Policy

Last updated 13 August 2026

The short version. DAWN has no accounts and no user profiles. Your sessions, photos, streaks and settings are stored on your own device and are never uploaded — except one thing you can choose to share, anonymously, which is deleted within a day. There are no advertising or analytics trackers in the app.

What stays on your device

All of your history lives in local storage on your phone and is never sent anywhere:

Deleting the app deletes this data. Because there is no account, we cannot see it, restore it or transfer it for you.

Location

If you grant location permission, your coordinates are used on the device to calculate local sunrise and sunset, the position of the sun, and the live night sky. Your coordinates are stored on the device only. They are sent to one third party in a single case, described below.

If you decline the permission, DAWN uses an approximate city location instead and says so in the interface. The app remains fully usable.

Weather

To fill in today's sky condition, the app requests a forecast from Open-Meteo, sending approximate coordinates with the request. No identifier accompanies the request, and Open-Meteo states that it does not require an account or API key for this use. See their terms and privacy information.

The daily counter

The line reading "N more people met the sun today" is produced by incrementing a single number on our server for the current date. The request contains no identifier, no location and no device information. The server stores a count per day, not a list of people.

Today's skies — the shared wall

If, and only if, you explicitly tap to share after a session, DAWN uploads:

No name, no account, no location and no device identifier is attached. Shared photos are visible to other people using the app on that day and are automatically deleted once the day has passed. Any photo can be reported from inside the app; a reported photo is hidden for the reporter immediately, and removed for everyone after two reports.

Do not photograph anything you would not want other people to see. Once shared, a photo cannot be recalled by you before its automatic deletion; write to us and we will remove it.

Notifications

If you turn on the morning reminder, notifications are scheduled locally on your device for upcoming sunrises. No push server is involved and no token is transmitted.

Software updates

The app checks our update service for a newer version of its interface bundle. That request contains the version the app is currently running and standard network information such as your IP address, which our infrastructure provider (Cloudflare) processes to serve the response. It is not used to build a profile.

What DAWN never does

Children

DAWN is not directed at children under 13 and does not knowingly collect personal information from them. Since no personal information is collected from anyone, this is straightforward in practice.

Your rights

Because your data is stored on your device, you exercise access and deletion directly: view it in the app, or delete the app to erase it. For anything shared to the public wall, contact us and it will be removed ahead of its automatic expiry.

Changes

If this policy changes, the date at the top will change with it, and material changes will be noted in the app's release notes.
